Yesterday I had the pleasure to speak to a fellow perfume passionate who managed to answer some pivotal questions that will aid me in my research and future interventions.
1.Which social media platforms are more prone to sell counterfeit perfumes?
There is a big difference between dupes and counterfeit.
Dupes is more about the attempts of some companies to create similar fragrances, whereas counterfeit when someone is using the similar name infringing the copyrights.( This company is currently working closely with legal departments regarding the protection of copyright and cannot disclose the platforms interested)
2.How can consumers differentiate between a genuine perfume and a counterfeit?
If you ask about counterfeit you can immediately notice the difference in the quality of the packaging, bottles, and fragrance.
3.What are the common signs that a perfume sold on social media might be counterfeit?
It is extremely important to buy products at the authorized point of sale, whether physical or e-store. The list of authorized stores can usually be found on brand websites.
4.Have you ever encountered counterfeit fragrances?
Yes, we find some counterfeit products sometime and we work with our legal department to protect our copyrights.
5.Do you think social media platforms address this problem accordingly?
Unfortunately, not. I have never seen when media promotes counterfeit product, however when it comes to the dupes I think that influencers / journalists etc should educate the customers explaining that there is a huge difference between dupes and original products and not promoting it.
6.From your point of view do you think that counterfeit perfumes impact the overall perfume industry?
Again, counterfeit could be easily recognized and are not impacting significantly the industry, dupes become quite popular but again the loyal customer and the customer who respect the quality will always purchase the original version
7.What steps can social media users take in order to prevent buying counterfeit perfumes?
Counterfeits: social media platform should check whether this is authorized retailer or not.
Dupes: depending on the influencers and journalists’ strategy.
